Mosquitoes in Restaurants, Hotels & Commercial Properties: Causes and Control

Article content

Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance to guests and employees but can also transmit a range of diseases. For restaurants, hotels, resorts and commercial properties, effective mosquito control should not focus solely on adult mosquitoes. It should begin by addressing mosquito breeding sites and larvae.

Where Do Mosquitoes Breed?

Mosquitoes need water to develop from eggs and larvae into adults. Even a small amount of standing water can provide a suitable environment for mosquitoes to breed.

At commercial properties, areas that require particular attention include:

  • Plant pots and water trays.
  • Buckets, containers and other outdoor water-holding items.
  • Gutters.
  • Air-conditioning drain pans.
  • Drains and drainage areas.
  • Decorative ponds and water features.
  • Outdoor areas where standing water can accumulate.

Under favorable conditions, the mosquito life cycle from egg to adult can be completed in approximately 7–10 days. Standing water that is not regularly inspected can therefore quickly become a mosquito breeding site.

Why Do Outdoor Areas Require Attention?

Gardens, landscaped areas, waste collection points, parking areas and other outdoor spaces often contain places where water can accumulate after rainfall or irrigation.

Mosquitoes breeding outdoors can then enter restaurants, F&B areas, hotel lobbies, guest areas and workplaces. Treating mosquitoes only inside the building may therefore fail to address the source of the problem.

What Risks Do Mosquitoes Pose?

In addition to affecting the guest experience, mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as dengue fever.

According to WHO, vector-borne diseases cause more than 700,000 deaths worldwide each year. In Vietnam, according to the Ministry of Health, more than 50,000 dengue cases and 5 deaths were recorded from the beginning of 2026 to mid-June 2026.

For hotels, restaurants and commercial properties, frequent mosquito activity may also indicate that uncontrolled breeding sites are present in or around the premises.

Controlling Breeding Sites Is a Key Step

An effective mosquito control program should prioritize reducing areas where mosquitoes can breed:

  • Remove standing water from unnecessary containers.
  • Keep water tanks and storage containers properly covered.
  • Inspect gutters, air-conditioning drain pans, drains and drainage areas.
  • Properly manage decorative ponds, water features and other areas that hold water.
  • Regularly inspect the premises for new areas of standing water.

Controlling mosquitoes at the larval stage helps prevent them from developing into adults and reduces reliance on treatment after adult mosquitoes have already appeared.

Inspection and control of mosquito breeding sites

Mosquito Control Requires a Combination of Measures

Spraying or treating adult mosquitoes can be part of a mosquito control program, but it does not replace the need to eliminate breeding sources.

An effective program should combine site inspection, identification of breeding sites, larval control, adult mosquito treatment when necessary and preventive measures.

Regular Monitoring and Inspection

Mosquito control is not a one-time activity. Standing water can return after rainfall, irrigation or changes in operating conditions.

Restaurants, hotels and commercial properties should regularly inspect high-risk areas, record potential breeding sites and take appropriate corrective action.

At Hi-Clean Express, we consider breeding-site management a foundation of sustainable mosquito control. Combining larval control, adult mosquito management and regular monitoring helps businesses proactively reduce mosquito activity and the risk of recurring infestations.
